ARTIST STATEMENT

The artwork of Kristy Darnell Battani embodies her study of the relationship between objects and their enviroments.

“The environment creates the lens through which we perceive the color, texture and temperament of the objects, regardless of whether it is a plant, building or person. If you change the environment, inescapably the object changes, too.”

Battani prefers using encaustic paint to create bold, luminous layers of colors in which she literally embeds pieces of the focus object and its environment. Through a combination of pigment, damar resin and beeswax , Battani builds the layers in which the subject matter seemingly hovers.

“Encaustic paint creates a third dimension that really allows viewers to touch and connect to the painting. I want viewers to feel like they have been transported into the environment.”
